Composition in 2 Genres

Composition in 2 Genres, Novel Project

Over the course of the semester we have read and written in a few different genres, but with this project we will push further out into the possibilities of genre composition, and experiment creatively using the novel you have chosen to read.

In this assignment, you will strategically target a specific audience(s), then develop key messages to communicate to that audience. Then, having finished your chosen novel, and discussed it with your peers, you will create two distinct pieces of work that respond to the novel, and relate your thoughts on it’s value, both in terms of literature and its approaches to psychological concepts.

You will also write a rationale to communicate the connections between genres and your strategies for choosing them. This rationale will make clear your audience, your message, your strategy, and provide an explanation of why you chose to compose within these particular genres.

What genres you choose are up to you. You might compose a poem, or right a song. You might make a short video, or draw a comic strip. You might design a billboard for Time’s square, or make a sculpture. Nothing is off limits, as long as the rationale makes your process and intention clear.

The final project must include:

  • Two genres of communication created for your audience(s)
  • rationale for your composition (1-2 pages) that orients your reader to the purpose of your work and its significance to your audience
